1936 Illustrated London News

I'm forever expanding my collection of old Aga range cooker ephemera and this wonderful advert from 1936 arrived a few days ago. This is a 2 oven Aga range cooker with a boiler unit to its left.

This is the exact cooker featured in our 'oldest working Aga range cooker' feature from January! Extraordinary to think that this cooker, illustrated here because reproducing photography was not possible in magazines, could still be running!

In 1936 air travel was slow and expensive, central heating rare and motorways still 20 years away. Aga range cookers were coke powered and being sold door to door by David Ogilvy and colleagues. And yet here we are 87 years on and some of those cookers are still with us. What stories they must have to tell!

Matthew is from a farming family near Bath and a graduate of King's College London who decided not to follow the 'standard' path into banking or the law. He has been working with these fabulous cookers in some form or another since 2003. Matthew runs Blake and Bull from beautiful Bradford on Avon, near Bath. Alf the golden retriever makes sure the working day finishes at 6pm sharp - dog walk time!
